On your next visit to McKnight’s, treat yourself to a visit to our Oil and Balsamic Vinegar tasting bar. Tasting bars have become extremely popular. “It is very much like wine tasting.”
The McKnight’s Tasting Bar features 5 varieties of Extra Virgin olive oils, from two pressings per year, and 16 flavours of olive oil, plus 32 balsamic vinegars. Sources of our olive oil include Italy, Greece, Spain, Australia and California. Each is in a fusti, a stainless steel container with a spigot that protects the products from light and air.
Costs are very reasonable; a 200-mL bottle of oil or vinegar is $18.99, a 375-ml size is $24.99 and 750-ml is $42.99. These prices enable customers to make the oils and vinegars staple products in their kitchens. Customers at any time can receive a tour, explanation of tasting and be able to sample any of the oils and vinegars. Products are sampled in a small cup. A sign on each fusti lists the product name, taste and flavour information as well as suggested pairings with other products. For the purists in the crowd, each Extra Virgin olive oil also shows a copy of the third party lab certificate proving that the olive oil is 100% Extra Virgin, and not cut with other type of oils, like most are in the market, to get the price down.
Owner Sam McKnight describes our House Blend of EVOO from Spain as “a complex blend of creamy, plus grassy, with a peppery finish.” A good olive oil is “soft, smooth and beautiful.” Oils come in a mild, medium or robust level of flavour. Olive oil is used in everything, from salads to marinades and even baking. For anyone who is lactose intolerant, the naturally flavoured Butter Olive Oil can be used in place of butter and it works well in baking. Our olive oils are Non-GMO, vegan and also gluten free.
Although everyone talks about olive oils, everyone buys balsamics once they try them. Sam is quick to say, “our balsamics are the best we have ever tasted and we have tried everything out there.” The balsamics, both the white and dark, are made with 80% grape must and all natural flavourings which makes them sweet enough to use on ice-cream or yogurt! In fact, Sam feels that this is the one thing that everyone should try a free sample of, before you make up your mind on what you think balsamics taste like.
